Best New York is an editorial shortlist of the restaurants, shops and services that serve all five boroughs well, for residents and visitors alike.
Eight million critics
Everyone in New York has an opinion about where to eat, who cuts hair best and which bodega makes the right bacon, egg and cheese. With more than eight million people spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, the city has an extraordinary range of businesses, and plenty of disappointing ones too. Finding the good place near you takes local knowledge, and time most people do not have.
What Best New York does
We publish rankings of the businesses that stand out in each category, from restaurants, bars and hotels to doctors, lawyers, beauty salons, gyms and real estate agents. Each list is a shortlist, a handful of places worth your time, with the address, hours and contact details you need to go or call. With more than twenty-five categories, the same guide can find you a late dinner and a reliable mover.
Beyond Manhattan
We make a point of covering the whole city. Some of New York's best cooking is in Flushing, Sunset Park and along Arthur Avenue, and some of its most trusted family businesses have served the same Bronx or Staten Island blocks for decades. A guide that stops at 14th Street misses most of New York.
Building each list
Our editors research every category borough by borough, look at how each business is regarded by the people who use it over time, and check that it is open and trading where we say it is. Lists are reviewed regularly, since restaurants close, salons move and rising rents push favorites to new neighborhoods.

Best New York is for anyone making a decision in the city: residents who have just moved to Astoria or Crown Heights, longtime locals looking for a new dentist, visitors who want to eat where New Yorkers eat. We aim to make the choice quicker and the result better.
